Space Question of the Week

Why is the return trip from the Moon faster?

When the astronauts went to the moon it took about three days to get there and only two days to get back. So, why is the return trip from the Moon faster?

The answer is that the Earth’s gravity is a lot stronger than the moon’s gravity. While the astronauts were traveling to the Moon their spacecraft was fighting against the Earth’s gravity and pulled slightly by the Moon’s gravity. But on the way home the spacecraft was “fighting” against the Moon’s weak gravity and pulled by the Earth’s stronger gravity. The result was that it took longer to get to the Moon than it did to return.
